Never underestimate the power of a uniform. Steve Jobs famously paired a black Issey Miyake turtleneck with jeans and New Balance sneakers for his everyday look, while Mark Zuckerberg is known to opt for a collection of identical gray Brunello Cucinelli T-shirts. Having a go-to outfit formula not only gives you a polished, signature look, but it can also save you time and streamline your morning routine, and is one less decision that you’ll have to make before the workday has even begun. Lauren Sherman-Kaoud has taken the advice to heart in more than one arena of her life, collecting a wardrobe of neutral COS tees and versatile block heels that go with everything on busy work days, and an all-black color palette for days when she is on mom duty.

Sherman-Kaoud is the chief marketing and creative officer at Ruggable, one of our favorite places to buy high-quality, washable rugs. Ruggable’s easy-to-care-for and attractive, modern designs, including a handful of collaborations with some of the world’s most iconic brands, have landed them high on our lists of the best outdoor rugs and best bath mats. Whether you’re looking to start building a uniform of your own, or just want the luxury of time in a busy workday, you’ll find the inspiration you’ve been waiting for in Sherman-Kaoud’s words.

Tell us about your favorite thing in your closet right now.

Earlier this year I committed to a uniform approach to dressing to reduce my mental load, and the COS Clean Cut Regular T-shirt is the cornerstone of it. I can wear it on the playground and under a blazer to a board meeting, so I now own 10 of them in white, black and grey and just plug them into every outfit.

What clothes do you reach for when you have a big day at work? What outfit gives you power?

If I’m not comfortable, there’s no way to feel powerful. Soft knits and block heels will carry me through a full day without a second thought. Reformation makes the best heels and sandals for gals with big feet (I’m a size 11).

What clothes or accessories are in heavy rotation during your nonworking hours?

When I’m not working, I’m in full mom mode and we are out having fun. My son is three and super active, so we’re at art class, playing in the creek, at soccer practice, in the sandbox — you get it. I’m wearing all black to hide the dirt: flowy Zara barrel pants, black Alo Accolade straight-leg sweatpants and an oversized Gap jean jacket.

If you had to pare your beauty products down to five things, what would you have left?

I would classify myself as makeup-curious. I’ve always wanted to be one of those women who knows exactly how to contour, owns 17 brushes and can watch a makeup tutorial without getting overwhelmed. I’m turning 40 in August and, at this point, I think it’s safe to say that’s probably not happening.

Honestly I’ve never used more than five products anyway. Every day it’s EltaMD tinted face sunscreen, Benefit Hoola bronzer (which I’ve been using since college), Victoria Beckham mascara and a tinted brow gel from Grande Cosmetics. They make me feel clean, polished, done in four minutes. That’s the goal.

What items make your home or office (or home office) great?

Lighting, always. My husband gifted me an Artemide Tolomeo for my office and it changed the entire space. There’s something about that warm directional glow that makes everything feel considered.

What’s the most luxurious product you use, and why is it worth the expense?

Between being a mom, my work that I genuinely love, being a wife and a friend—being present for the people I care about is the thing that feels most valuable. So, occasional childcare after the work day allows me to have a date night with my husband, a girls’ dinner or just a few uninterrupted hours. If you’re a parent, you know, it’s expensive, but it’s worth every penny. In a season of life where everyone is stretched thin, having the ability to protect those relationships feels like the ultimate luxury.

What’s in your kitchen that you can’t live without?

I’m not a complicated coffee person, but I am very committed. Every morning starts with a pot of Peet’s in the Moccamaster, and honestly, the ritual is almost as important as the coffee itself. Before work, before emails, before anyone needs anything from me, there’s a quiet moment with that first cup.
