Data period: October 2026. Data release, publication and source check: November 1, 2026.

South Korea’s trade and industry ministry reported today that October exports rose 93.7% year on year to USD 115.28 billion. The average per working day reached USD 5.24 billion, up approximately 76%. The ministry ranks October second behind September for total export value. Primary MOTIR release, November 1.
The ministry links semiconductor export growth to AI investment and elevated prices as well as shipment volumes. That distinction matters: a trade-value statistic does not count the number of chips produced or the number of people using artificial intelligence.
OPC analysis · Why one percentage is not enough
Consider a hypothetical business exporting 100 units of value each working day. Ten working days produce a monthly total of 1,000; twenty produce 2,000. The monthly total doubles even though the daily pace is unchanged. This is not a decomposition of Korea’s figures. It illustrates why a monthly total and a daily average deserve to be read together.
Dividing by working days does not, by itself, separate prices from quantities or replace full seasonal adjustment. Nor can the difference between the two published growth rates automatically be labelled the exact contribution of holidays. The measures answer different questions.
A practical lesson for businesses
When reviewing your own revenue, put the total alongside working days, units delivered, average selling prices and the mix of orders. Higher sales value can combine more orders, higher prices and a shift towards more expensive products. Without that distinction, a price effect can easily be mistaken for a greater volume of work.
A macroeconomic release also needs to be kept separate from an investment thesis about an individual company. Export data alone do not establish that company’s margins, future orders or whether its share price is reasonable. We do not infer a recommendation to buy Korean manufacturers or other securities from this release.
