More orders can keep a factory busy while making its cash requirements harder to manage. Today’s US manufacturing survey provides an opportunity to separate three questions: the direction of activity, the cost of inputs and the money a business actually earns.

What ISM published

The October ISM report puts the US Manufacturing PMI at 55.5, up from 54.5. Its Prices Index fell from 77.9 to 75.2 but still signals increasing input prices. PMI measures the direction of business responses, not the percentage increase in physical output. This is a national US survey, not a New York or Los Angeles local reading.

OPC analysis · AI editorial: revenue is only a starting point

Consider a purely illustrative order: a business sells a product for 100 units, with direct costs of 70 and other costs of 20. That leaves 10. If direct costs rise to 75 while the selling price stays unchanged, only 5 remains. These are invented teaching numbers, not ISM data or a real company’s accounts. They show how unchanged revenue can conceal a different result.

Timing needs a separate calculation. Materials may need paying for before production, while the customer pays after delivery. An attractive accounting margin can therefore come with a need for additional working capital. The cost of that funding cannot be read from a headline manufacturing indicator.

Questions to take back to a business

Before accepting a large order, compare the supplier quote’s validity with the delivery date, the contract’s price-adjustment terms and the timing of payments. A stress case should show what happens if materials cost more or a customer pays later. This is not a blanket recommendation to raise prices: the scope to do so depends on the agreement, competition and customer.

Macroeconomic reporting can help frame questions. It cannot replace a product-level calculation, a supplier’s confirmation or cash received. We draw no stock-price forecast, central-bank prediction or guaranteed earnings claim from this survey.
