A school’s AI decision starts with a more specific question than whether to allow it. Which account should have access, for what task, and what would demonstrate that the student learned? Google’s latest announcement provides a useful reason to separate those decisions.

What Google announced
In its November 3 announcement, Google says K–12 student-account access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will default to off unless administrators enable it. Implementation has no stated date; details are promised in coming months. This is a plan for those accounts, not evidence of a current Search outage.
Google separately announced global Classroom Guided Learning availability from November 3 and a Search pilot in selected US schools later in November. Neither timetable is the implementation date for the account-control changes.
OPC analysis · AI editorial: define the task before the setting
An administrative switch does not decide what a student should learn. Our recommendation is to start with one concrete activity: explaining the reasoning behind a solution, for example. Specify where assistance is allowed and what the student must demonstrate independently. Then choose access arrangements around that task.
The questions below are an OPC editorial checklist, not an announced Google configuration procedure or a legal assessment. School leaders, teachers and administrators can work through them before changing a setting.
Five questions to put in writing
1. Who makes the decision? Name a responsible person and a way to record the decision. Teachers need a clear route for reporting problems. Families need an explanation they can understand rather than a product announcement forwarded without context.
2. Which account and activity? List the school group, subject and permitted use. Do not automatically treat a student’s personal account as a substitute for school-managed access. Check current terms and administrative capabilities instead of inferring how every service behaves from the name of one feature.
3. What material is involved? Prepare a trial assignment without personal information. Before using real student work, establish what data is necessary, who can access it and what processing terms apply. This article does not establish that a particular school complies with applicable rules.
4. What counts as learning? Design a follow-up question that students explain without assistance. A polished submission or satisfaction with the tool is a different observation from understanding. Record errors and cases where a teacher had to correct the response as well as successful exercises.
5. What is the alternative? Offer an equivalent route for a student who cannot use the tool. Decide when the trial will be assessed and what would cause it to stop. A useful pilot has a question and an endpoint, rather than simply an enabled licence.
An independent reference and the limits of this report
UNESCO’s 2023 guidance emphasises privacy, human agency and age-appropriate pedagogical validation. It is an older policy reference, not November 4 news or evidence that a particular service improves learning.
OPC has not tested the feature in a school administration console or verified availability for a particular district, language or licence. Check actual account behaviour and current documentation before issuing school instructions. A supplier announcement describes product intentions; educational outcomes need separate assessment.
