Maersk raised its outlook. How to read the freight rate behind it

On November 5, Denmark’s A.P. Moller–Maersk raised its 2026 underlying operating profit (EBIT) guidance from the August range of US$4.5–6.5 billion to US$8–8.5 billion. Management cited third-quarter performance and its view of the rest of the year. Freight rates, marine fuel prices and demand are among the variables that can affect the outcome. Higher rates, slightly lower volumes

Maersk’s Ocean business reported an average loaded freight rate of US$3,287 per forty-foot equivalent unit (FFE), up from US$2,244 a year earlier, about 46%. Loaded volume slipped from 3.397 million to 3.370 million FFE, a decline of 0.8%. Maersk pointed to high spot rates, East Asian exports and capacity constraints amid network congestion. For an importer, the useful distinction is between shipments already priced and those still to book. A spot quote is tied to a particular booking and validity window. A longer contract can fix the base rate for a period while fuel or other surcharges move under its terms. A carrier’s higher average therefore tells you little on its own about the next invoice from a particular port to your warehouse.

Worked example. An importer plans ten identical containers. Six have an agreed base rate for the period and four still need booking. If the spot quote rises by US$300 per container and the agreed base stays fixed, the base freight budget rises by US$1,200. Surcharges, currency and inland transport are separate in this example. The figures are hypothetical.

Before booking. Request quotes for the same dates, container size and route, including pickup and delivery points. Ask each provider to break out base freight, included surcharges, quote validity, charges after free time expires and rebooking terms. Then compare the total on that common basis.
