You can recognize a T-shirt from its outline. Move the shoulder seam, though, and you change how the sleeve hangs and how an arm moves inside it. The Costume Institute is putting this kind of transformation at the center of its next spring exhibition. The Met has announced extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday for May 9, 2027, through January 9, 2028.
What the Met announced
The museum will look at how designers work with familiar garment shapes and with materials such as paper, plastic and metal. It plans to combine pieces from its collection with loans and new acquisitions, and to consider how clothes acquire meaning through wear and care. The exhibition is upcoming. These are ways to think about its premise before the galleries open.

Start with function. On a pair of jeans, look for the pocket you can reach easily. Enlarging it or moving it can change both the silhouette and what the wearer can carry. On a puffer coat, follow the seams and ask where they hold insulation in place and where their main effect is to give the coat a shape.
Try a material swap. Imagine the same sleeve made first from soft jersey and then from stiff paper. Where would it crease when you bent your elbow? What would a pattern cutter have to change? Two sleeves can have a similar outline and be built in very different ways.
Look for what wear leaves behind. Faded fabric or a repair can tell you something about a garment’s life after it was made. Turn your most-worn T-shirt inside out and compare the shoulder seam, hem and neckline. Which part has changed most? Where could a repair keep the shirt in use?
