German manufacturers received 4.4% more new orders in September 2026 than in August, in price-adjusted terms and after seasonal and calendar adjustments. Destatis released the provisional figures on November 5. Over the full third quarter, orders were just 0.2% higher than in the second quarter. The two readings are useful for different decisions on a factory floor.

September recovered part of August’s loss
Destatis revised August’s fall from July to 10.1%. Imagine July’s order volume was 100 points. August would take it to 89.9. September’s 4.4% increase applies to that smaller base, bringing it to about 93.9 points. This is an illustration calculated from the rounded monthly changes.
Automotive orders increased 10.5% in September and were the main contributor to the rebound. Destatis says orders and production in that industry had been low in the previous two months, partly because of production changeovers and factory holidays. Machinery orders rose 8.3%, helped by a large order for engines and turbines. Across manufacturing, orders excluding large contracts were up 5.1% in September, but only 0.1% in the third quarter.

A confirmed order affects the schedule once the supplier knows what the buyer wants, how much and when. It can take time to show up in production. A supplier with several customers can track three things separately: confirmed orders by delivery date, work in progress and completed deliveries. If the extra orders are due next quarter, a jump in the monthly index on its own gives little reason to add a shift next week.
Updated November 6, 2026, at 8:01 a.m. CET. Provisional Destatis figures show that German output rose 0.7% from August to September after seasonal and calendar adjustments. Excluding energy and construction, output rose 1.7%. Across the third quarter, the broader production measure was 0.4% below the second quarter. Machinery illustrates how the two measures can move apart: September orders rose 8.3% while production fell 6.5%. The indexes cannot tell a supplier when a particular order will reach the factory floor. For capacity planning, it helps to check which weeks the confirmed deliveries fall in.
