Powerhouse Parramatta, a museum of applied arts and sciences on the Parramatta River in Western Sydney, is scheduled to open on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Sydney time. A section through the building explains two of its big decisions. An outer steel lattice makes room for large exhibitions. A raised ground floor and a space underneath give floodwater somewhere to go.

Putting the steel at the edge
Moreau Kusunoki led the design with Australian practice Genton. Engineering firm Arup describes a structural exoskeleton, a steel lattice around the building’s perimeter. Its diagonals help carry loads and stiffen the structure. The arrangement makes large column-free exhibition spaces possible across several levels. The largest of the seven galleries has a hoisting door on its river side that can open the hall to the public space outside. Infrastructure NSW project profile · Arup engineering report, page 13.
A room free of columns gives curators more freedom to place a large object and rearrange a show. The other measure worth checking is the route an object takes from the delivery truck, through the door and into position. A gallery’s floor area tells you little about that journey.
Where the water goes and how people get out
The flood design allows water to pass through a space beneath the raised ground floor. In 2021, Infrastructure NSW published a model of how the March 20 heavy rain would have affected the future building. The museum was still under construction. A 2022 New South Wales parliamentary committee report also records changes made after public submissions, including provision to close off the lower space and revisions to paths up to the raised level. The report documents the design at that point and the debate over its assumptions. Infrastructure NSW’s flood model · Parliamentary report, paragraphs 2.103 to 2.114.

Start with a section drawing for any building beside water. Mark the lowest vulnerable use, such as an archive, electrical switchboard or plant room. Then trace the water’s route and, separately, the route a person can take from the lowest accessible area. Finally, ask who can close the space, what triggers that decision and how the plan works during a power cut. Those answers should remain easy to find after handover.
In its November 1 release, the state put the wider project budget at A$915 million, of which A$660.1 million covered delivery of the museum itself, including design, building work, fit-out, exhibitions and landscaping. The remainder covered the site, a storage facility at Castle Hill and collection digitisation. Before comparing this museum with another, check which of those costs each budget includes.
