Brooklyn’s new bins: what changes for Community District 2
More than 700 on-street containers are being installed. The rollout is local, not yet citywide.
Brooklyn Community District 2 is beginning a new stage of residential trash collection. On October 29, the city announced installation of more than 700 stationary Empire Bins, intended to replace bags left at the curb.
What is changing now
Installation is underway in this district, with completion expected by the end of fall. The city says six additional districts will receive bins in 2027; its wider target is citywide containerization by the end of 2031. Those are future milestones, not completed coverage.
For residents and building managers
The useful question is whether your building is included in the current rollout and which instructions apply to it. Do not assume an announcement for Community District 2 changes collection arrangements elsewhere in Brooklyn. Check the sanitation department’s building-specific guidance before changing how you set out waste.
