Third Avenue’s redesign puts safer crossings at the center
The city has announced a 2.1-mile safety overhaul in Brooklyn. A plan is not yet a completed street.
A new plan for Third Avenue in Sunset Park aims to change how people cross, cycle and drive along a 2.1-mile corridor. The city announced the redesign on October 28, citing 17 deaths along the corridor over the past decade.
What the proposal contains
The announced approach includes protected cycling space, shorter pedestrian crossings and changes to intersections. The practical focus is the relationship between fast-moving traffic and the people who live, work or travel beside it.
What to watch next
Residents and businesses should follow the detailed street layouts, implementation notices and access arrangements as work develops. A public announcement does not mean every crossing has already changed. For a trip today, follow existing signs and current transport guidance.
NYCity.city will distinguish the announced design from the conditions people encounter on the street.
